An amazing route to climb to one of the top mountains of S Miguel Island to enjoy one of the most fantastic views over the island
The Tour
We start our day on a visit to the “Vieira” ceramic factory (closed on weekends) opened in 1862 and producing already for 5 generations, the traditional handmade blue and white ceramic of the Azores. Learn all about the different stages of this handicraft and take some of it with you from the factory store.
Leaving Lagoa, we go up in the mountain on a scenic route enjoying beautiful breathtaking views over both sides of the Island. Our stop is at 947m altitude in Pico da Barrosa, the geodesic center of São Miguel Island. From here, a 360º view allow us to see the mountain range of Sete Cidades, Pico da vara as well as Ponta Delgada, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande. A must in our tour.
Starting our descent, another stop with a different angle from the Fire Lake, the highest and the second biggest lake of the Island located at 545m above the sea level.
At middle route, time to visit the Natural Park of Caldeira Velha, with its termal waters heated by the volcanic steam at 39ºC. This enchanted forest is filled with endemic vegetation, untouched botanical species and of course, the fantastic iron hot water waterfall.
After this amazing views, let´s explore the city of Ribeira Grande, the second city of the Island, with its central square located alongside the river that gives it’s name.
Time to taste the internationally well known Passionfruit Liquor and spirits from the Liquor Factory Mulher de Capote. This Family owned Company produces many fruit liquors, brandies and cream liquors since 1936, and it’s the largest producer in the Azores.
This location is famous for it's waves that bring surfers from many countries to take participate at one stage of the SurfPro Championship.
This is why Ribeira Grande is also knowned as the Northern Surf Capital of the Azores
